Literature Seminar #WalesLitGermany 4-6 March 2021

As part of this year’s “Wales in Germany 2021” campaign, Literaturhaus Stuttgart, the British Council, Literature Wales and the Welsh Government are jointly organising a virtual literature seminar.

Themed “We are Wales: disparate voices, landscapes and stories” the seminar offers literature fans the opportunity to learn about contemporary Welsh and British writers and literature as well as to engage with authors and their works.

The online event #WalesLitGermany is chaired by English novelist Niall Griffiths and Welsh writer and academic Dr. Francesca Rhydderch, featuring readings, workshops, talks and discussions with some of Wales’ best writers, including:

Professor Charlotte Williams OBE was a journalist before devoting herself entirely to writing. Two of her novels about the sympathetic heroine and psychotherapist “Jessica Mayhew”, set in Wales, have been published in German.

Zoë Brigley is a young Welsh poet and editor of the leading Welsh poetry magazine “Poetry Wales”. She was awarded the “Eric Gregory Award” for her poetry and nominated for the prestigious “Dylan Thomas Prize”.

Manon Steffan Ros, Welsh author, has published screenplays, over twenty children’s books and three adult novels in Welsh. Her award-winning novel “Blasu” has been translated into English under the title “The Seasoning”.

Professor Richard Gwyn published numerous novels, poetry and prose collections before becoming Chair of Creative and Critical Writing at Cardiff University in 2013.

There will also be an evening event with poetry, film screenings by the National Dance Company Wales and music, hosted by BBC Wales presenter Gary Raymond.

The virtual #WalesLitGermany seminar will take place on Zoom in English, with some reading in Welsh, for which English translation is provided.

Dates: Thursday, 4 March, 17:30 – 20:15; Friday, 5 March, 14:00 – 21:30, Saturday, 6 March, 12:00 – 18:15.

The seminar offers a unique opportunity to gain a deeper insight into the Welsh language. It is one of the oldest spoken languages in Europe, documented at least since the 4th century, which has experienced a renaissance since the 1990s, making Wales officially a bilingual nation.
